In a press conference organized by the group “Le B’Rispett Lejn il-Gejjieni” in Sliema, the group’s main spokesperson Andrea Pace thanked the media for having giving adequate coverage to the group’s statements and activities during the week. Pace explained that unfortunately a section of the media which claims to be independent complete ignored the existence of the group yet at the end of the day this only served to undermine the credibility and independent credentials of the aforementioned media.
Andrea Pace explained that the group believes in the permanancy of marriage and not in a contract with an expiry date. He further explained that the country is divided between those saying yes who want an immediate short term solution and between those saying no who prefer a long term solution with a long term vision. Pace further explained that the state needs to legislate within this framework.
The group “Le b’rispett lejn il-gejjieni” insisted that it is a shame that while divorce is being discussed by some as a fundamental right when in reality it is not whilst the rights of children which are established and clear are being given the side.
Pace also said that there is a great need to explore the needs of those whose marriage has failed or at risk of failing. The group “Le B’Rispett Lejn il-Gejjieni” insisted that such families should be afforded all the necessary protection. The group also expressed its concern at the way the process is being rushed.
The group “Le B’Rispett Lejn il-Gejjieni” again explained how the introduction of divorce will bring about a new form of poverty which will increase dependants, something which can be seen even in other countries including Italy.
Andrea Pace concluded his intervention on behalf of the group by appealing to all youths who are against divorce to make their position public and find no shame in doing so. At the end of the intervention by Andrea Pace the Press Officer of the group Angelo Micallef took questions from the press.
