Let the Truth Be Told Twelve Points against Divorce

(This article was contributed by Daniel Gauci)

Many people will sit in the election booth on the 28th May and will vote on the motion being put forward. Many will base their vote on what they have heard on the media, or based on the problems that they have heard or encountered, some will decide on what their conscience thinks and so on and so forth.

However few realize that we as democratic citizens, we shall vote in the interest of the general population also referred to as the common good. Very few of the Maltese people have any idea on what divorce brings and what will be its effects on society, and all the views we have are made from the perceptions of those spinning the propaganda machine. What we want are the actual figures and the actual outcomes of what happens when the divorce is enforced, however these are not high on the agenda of those who play the trumpets of the pro-divorce, since what this is more a question of convenience than helping people make the correct decision.

The largest hobbyhorse of the pro-divorce propaganda has been mud sling anyone who stands with a different stance. As usual the main scapegoat is obviously the Catholic Church, which was even told that it should not interfere with divorce, which in stark contrast the Church is the major player in this issue since divorce goes against its teachings and since the Maltese population is Roman Catholic the Church shall be playing an active role in this discussion.

Higher Taxation; an increase in the number of single parents, together with the increase to social problems will lead to higher demand of social service which will exert extra pressure on our services which will normally translate in higher taxation.

Increase in Co-Habitation; it is not true that as a result of this law co-habitations decrease since we have seen an increase in the rate of cohabitations with the introduction the increase in the rates of cohabitation do not promise well for our society since these signal lower levels of maturity and commitment and also are a result of a greater instability.

Increase in Family Instability; with the divorce option inevitably the instability of families in general increases, it is known that wherever divorce was introduced more families tended to break up on a constant yearly basis, this means that divorce in itself prompts more people to exit earlier their commitments than if it did not exist, this will also reduce the amount of compassion and understanding between existing couples.

Less Families Means Lower Quality Upbringing; in every country where the divorce was introduced it was found that the amount of people who decided to have children (and hence a family) out of wedlock increased drastically, this creates further socio-economic imbalance since partners are free to leave and the fact that children are brought up in such unstable environments effects their outcome.

What we Plough is what we Harvest; it is a known fact that one of the main reasons to who we are today is mainly a result of our upbringing, we have now proved that by the introduction of divorce the number of people in co-habitation and divorced will increase drastically, Children will suffer drastically and will be brought up in torn families and the risk of psychological issues increase, this means that we are jeopardizing our future, there is no beating around the bush here since these facts are already proven.

Personal Agenda; it is a fact that currently in Malta we have an oversupply of lawyers, if the divorce bill where to pass this would create an increased demand for their services and hence it is in their personal interest that it passes and since they control most of the political scene some of these are doing all they can promote divorce.

Against Morals; divorce goes against our morality we are being told to go against our morality in order not to be egoistic however in this case the only egoists are those who want divorce to increase their workload or to divorce for economic profits.

Not Prepared; from the divorce question one may be led to understand that the required education for responsible divorce already exists, however it does not since such education will negatively affect those propagating the yes movement, no divorce information campaign has been led.

For the Few; the propaganda machine of the yes movement revolves against those suffering from domestic violence; however truth be told the majority using divorce will be using it for economic scopes or to fulfil their infidelity needs.

Church Losses; many are saying that the church is against divorce since this would lead a lower demand for annulments, however recent curia statistics shows that the church goes under profit wise from these cases of annulment and hence this statement is pure hearsay

The Effects; professional studies have shown that effects of the introduction of divorce normally increases the amounts of addictions in these people with the main addictions being increase in working hours, alcohol and drugs, it is also noted that divorce in certain circumstances creates a chain of related events in familiars of divorced couples mainly increased tendency to divorce, also many consider that divorce will have negative life altering outcomes mainly on children of the divorced couple.

Of Contracts; a marriage vow is something which is done in good faith from the two parties and based on an innocent vow, and therefore apart from very exceptional cases this vow is meant to be kept and not to be used for our conveniences, also even due to the fact that the divorce will only dissolve the couple in the eyes of the law, the fact that a married couple lives as divorced goes against the vows given in the church and hence it may be the time that we separate civil marriage and church marriage with two different controlling institutions so everyone has the right of choice.

Finally after seeing all this I’m convinced that the choice I shall be making is the correct choice, today many have failed to acknowledge that the right way is most of the time not the easiest, and also very alarmingly we are trying to ditch our morals in order to adapt to a secular world as if our morals are wrong.

Many fail to see that not all that glitters is gold and the secular world is filled with glitters, such as buy now pay later, conventionalism over realism, fortunately we have an example which is a fine example where all this gets us which is the U.S.A which is a fine example of arrogance abroad and within its people, greed with one per cent of the population getting the majority of the country’s wealth, huge rate of crimes and social instability, debt ridden and on the highway to become a third world country.

Unfortunately for us Maltese we always realize our mistakes after we have committed them and this weighs hard on us, this time we shall try to make a change and both due to the fact that Divorce creates more problems than it solves and also since God’s teachings surely cannot be wrong we are to make the right decision and vote with a big NO.
